Her father, Otto Frank, the only survivor of the family, returned to Amsterdam after the war to find that Anne’s diary had been saved, and his efforts led to its publication in 1947. It was translated from its original Dutch and first published in English in 1952 as The Diary of a Young Girl. It has since been translated into many languages. The diary, which was given to Anne on her 13th birthday, chronicles her life from 12 June 1942 until 1 August 1944, and it documents her experiences hiding during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II. She gained international fame posthumously.

The Frank family moved from Germany to Amsterdam in 1933, the year the Nazis gained control over Germany. By the beginning of 1940, they were trapped in Amsterdam by the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. As persecutions of the Jewish population increased in July 1942, the family went into hiding in the hidden rooms of Otto Frank’s office building. After two years, the group was betrayed and transported to concentration camps. Anne and her elder sister, Margot, were eventually transferred to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where they died of typhus in March 1945. Anne was three months short of turning sixteen years old and Margot nineteen.

The Russian Civil War (7 November (25 October) 1917 – October 1922) was a multi-party war in the former Russian Empire fought between the Bolshevik Red Army and the White Army, the loosely allied anti-Bolshevik forces. Many foreign armies warred against the Red Army, notably the Allied Forces and the pro-German armies. The Red Army defeated the White Armed Forces of South Russia in Ukraine and the army led by Aleksandr Kolchak in Siberia in 1919. The remains of the White forces commanded by Pyotr Nikolayevich Wrangel were beaten in the Crimea and were evacuated in the autumn of 1920. Many pro-independence movements emerged after the break-up of the Russian Empire and fought in the war. A number of them – Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland – were established as sovereign states. The rest of the former Russian Empire was consolidated into the Soviet Union shortly afterwards. [read more]

Of the Romanov family, there were four “clans”, each descended from one of the four sons of Tsar Nicholas I:

The Vladimirovichi (Grand Duke Vladimir Nikolaevich)

The Mikhailovichi (Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich)

The Constantinovichi (Grand Duke Constantine Nikolaevich)

The Alexandrovichi (Alexander II, Alexander Nikolaevich)

The ruling clan from 1855 to 1917 was the Alexandrovichi- Tsars Alexander II his son Alexander III and the last Tsar Nicholas II.

The children of the Tsar take upon their father’s name with either ‘evna’ for girls or ‘vich’ for boys. This literally means “daughter of” and “son of” So if we consider Tsar Alexander III’s first son, the future Nicholas II, Nicholas was born Nikolai Alexandrovich Romanov. His sister Xenia was born Xenia Alexandrovna Romanova, Xenia, daughter of Alexander.

Families in Russia, and those widespread over Europe and Asia, still use this system to this day, usually calling their children with both their first name and patronymic (which acts as a sort of middle name). Currently in Iceland, the Patronymic is favored over the family (last) name.

When it came to wives, because of the close-relatedness of the four clans, sometimes it became difficult to marry someone who was not your immediate first cousin (frowned upon by the church). For hundreds of years, the solution to this was to marry a foreign Princess. Because these girls were not Russian, and usually their father’s didn’t possess Russian-sounding names, they adopted the patronymic Feodorovna. This stems from the icon saint Feodorovskaya Theotokos, with which they were baptised when (if) they converted to Russian Orthodoxy.
(It was compulsory for future Tsarinas to convert, but only recommended for Grand Duchesses).

Usually the patronymics make it easier to distinguish between close cousins, e.g., Georgy Alexandrovich was the son of Alexander III, while George Mikhailovich was the son of Mikhail Nikolaevich.

I hope that clears a bit up for some who sit there and wonder, what the hell those crazy Russians were thinking with their strange names.

They were organised and led by Russian Orthodox priest Georgy Gapon.

Laura became famous fifty years before Helen Keller did, but yet she was less well-known. Laura was born in Hanover, New Hampshire, on 21 December 1829, and she was known for being the first deaf-blind child to gain a significant education in the English language. Laura was a delicate infant, small and rickety, and suffered from convulsions until she was eighteen months old. Her family was struck with scarlet fever when Laura was two years old. The illness killed her two older sisters and left her deaf, blind, and without a sense of smell or taste. Though she gradually recovered her health, she remained deaf and blind.

During her youth, Laura was enrolled in the Perkins School for the Blind in Boston. Helen Keller’s mother, Kate Keller, read Charles Dickens’ account in American Notes and was inspired to seek advice which led to her hiring a teacher and former pupil of the same school, Anne Sullivan. Sullivan learned the manual alphabet at the Perkins Institution which she took back to Helen, along with a doll wearing clothing that Bridgman had sewn herself.

Of course this is a very hard choice as all of the costumes worn at the Ball were so beautiful. I pick those four as my favorites, in no particular order.

Princess Zinaida Yusupova - Russian Nobility

The princess was a part of the Yusupov Noble family, the mother of Prince Felix Yusupov and the mother-in-law of Princess Irina Alexandrovna who was the niece of the Emperor. She was the greatest Russian heiress of her day and was the last of her line at the House of Yusupov. A leading figure of pre-revolutionary Russia, she was famous for her blue-eyed beauty and the lavishness of her hospitality.

Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia

Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia was the wife of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, who was also the Governor of Moscow. Before her marriage, she used to be Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and by Rhine, which was a German grand duchy She was also the elder sister of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia.

Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna of Russia

Probably my favorite female gown of the ball, Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna of Russia was the younger sister of the Emperor Nicholas II. This costume reminds me so much of one of Padme Amidala’s Star Wars costumes in the Episode Two: Attack of the Clones, which one dress was actually inspired by the Russian culture.

Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich of Russia

Definitely my favorite male costume of this ball, Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich (brother of the emperor) looked so handsome and majestic in this outfit. Grand Duke Michael had asked his mother to lend him a big diamond clip to wear as an aigrette in his fur cap. The clip was of fabulous value; it had belonged to Emperor Paul I, and the Dowager Empress wore it very seldom. She lent it to her son most reluctantly.

“And Michael lost it! It must have fallen off his cap while he was dancing. My mother and he were in despair - the clip being one of the crown jewels. All the halls at the palace were searched that very night. At dawn the detectives searched from basement to attic. The diamond clip was never found.” - Olga Alexandrovna

thestuffoffairytales:
