The House of Romanov was the second and last imperial dynasty to rule over Russia for more than three hundred years, reigning from 1613 until the 1917 overthrow of the monarchy during the February Revolution. The Romanov Dynasty succeeded the Rurik Dynasty after the Time of Troubles. A 1861 drawing of Emperor Alexander II of Russia being emotional over his father’s grave at the Saint Peter & Paul Fortress in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Emperor Nicholas I died on 2 March 1855 at age 58, during the Crimean War. He caught a chill; refusing to rest and recuperate, he persisted with his usual heavy workload, leading to pneumonia and death.
