A 1861 drawing of Emperor Alexander II of Russia being emotional over his father’s grave at the Saint Peter & Paul Fortress in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Emperor Nicholas I died on 2 March 1855 at age 58, during the Crimean War. He caught a chill; refusing to rest and recuperate, he persisted with his usual heavy workload, leading to pneumonia and death.
